You might want to look into GiveWell, a non-profit which studies other non-profits in depth and ranks them based on efficacy of each dollar donated. If you want to go deeper into it, I learned about them from The Most Good You Can Do, which approaches the problem of efficacy from multiple angles. It significantly reshaped my thinking about charity.
